Today we are proud to announce our fourth of five nominations for our 2017 “Californian of the Year” award. This award will go to the person who most exemplifies the drive and determination to change the character of Colorado into that of California.
Colorado character means craving the freedom to make one’s own decisions. By working to turn Colorado into East California, our nominees promote the Californian value of demanding to make decisions for other people.
Our fourth nominee is hero of the rural man and protector of the taxpayer, State Senator Jerry Sonnenberg.
This week Republicans in Washington passed a historic tax cut. So, it is perfectly fitting that we honor the Republican in Colorado who led the effort to do the exact opposite here: raising taxes without even asking voters first.
Unlike California, Colorado holds a deep belief in asking voters directly BEFORE raising debt or taxes. We even enshrined it in our state constitution. For years, Republicans in the legislature have battled back the Democrats’ schemes to raise taxes and debt without consent of the voters. Their latest ploy was to tax sick patients with a bed tax for as long as they’re in the hospital. But they couldn’t do it without a couple Republican stooges to help get it passed in the Republican controlled senate.
That’s where Senator Sonnenberg’s Hollywood-like ability to act like a conservative back home in his rural district, but then change into the role of a tax-and-spend Democrat in Denver came in. Thanks to cowardly Republican leadership that facilitated the deal in the last 3 days of the legislative session, Jerry was able to carry the progressives’ plan to victory.
Coloradans will now be paying over $550 million per year in new taxes, and carrying nearly $2 billion of new debt without even being shown the respect of asking first. Step aside Harvey Weinstein.
Our panel of judges realized that if Californian character means making decisions for other people, Jerry Sonnenberg is the Jerry Brown of Colorado!
