Our 5th Californian of the Year nominee is…

The Independence Institute is proud to announce its fifth of five nominations for 2018’s Californian of the Year. This coveted recognition goes to the Coloradan who best exemplifies the effort to change our once liberty-loving Colorado into the command-and-control state of California. We believe in the Colorado Culture where we crave the freedom to make […]
Don’t think of us as turning into California

Don’t think of it as Colorado turning into California. Think of it as Colorado turning into Berkeley, California. Our new governor is from Boulder, the Berkeley of the Rockies. Our new attorney general was the Dean of the University of Colorado law school, in Boulder. The majority leader in the state senate, the speaker of […]
Colorado now California?

We have been warning that Colorado is being transformed into California for years. Tuesday’s elections will only speed the Californication of our once liberty-loving state. Colorado has for generations been a magnet for those who wish to write their own biography, to risk their wealth and talents, and to work in free association with others […]
Becoming California won’t be cheap

Another summer, another command from Hick on High. Breaking out his best Barack Obama rule-by-executive-fiat pen, Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper signed the erroneously titled “Maintaining Progress on Clean Vehicles” executive order. Load up your Nissan Leaf, the 21st Century family truckster. It’s California or bust! Hick’s two-page executive order has more platitudes than substance and […]

In case you couldn’t make it, or would like to watch it again, here is this year’s Founders’ Night discussion between David Harsanyi and Steven Hayward, moderated by Jon Caldara, on the topic: Is Colorado slowly turning into East California?

First Nomination for Californian of the Year: Christine Berg

Our first nominee is Christine Berg, Mayor of Lafayette, for her leadership and vote to make Lafayette the first city in Colorado to bar local restaurants from advertising “sugar drinks” on kids’ menus. The ordinance limits children’s default choices to water and milk, among other offshoots, such as sparkling water and non-dairy milk alternatives.
Welcome to Colorful East California

by Jon Caldara A fascinating recent report by The Denver Post’s Aldo Svaldi (which I’m pretty sure is the name he made up to start a budget winery) details the demographic shifts happening to our once ruggedly individualistic state. More people are still pouring into Colorado than sneaking out, but the gap is narrowing. Last […]
