Today we are proud to announce our third of five nominations for our 2017 “Californian of the Year” award. This award will go to the person who most exemplifies the drive and determination to change the character of Colorado into that of California.

Colorado character means craving the freedom to make one’s own decisions. By working to turn Colorado into East California, our nominees promote the Californian value of demanding to make decisions for other people.

Our third nominee is citizen activist, Bernie-sycophant, and manager of a Red Robin restaurant, Brandon Rietheimer, for his work in forcing Denver building owners to plant lawns on their roofs.

Our panel of judges wanted to recognize the many California-like issues that have been foisted upon municipal ballots. From Aspen’s $3.00 per pack nanny-tax on cigarettes, to Lakewood’s growth limits, to Fort Collins going into the private Internet business, to Boulder nationalizing the power company, there has been some tough competition lately. But we believe this particular hamburger-peddler turned Californian-wannabe’s dream to force people to haul plants to one of the weirdest places around earns him a nomination.

One might think that planting shrubs and trees on the ground would be simpler, but it wouldn’t be Californian. Or that he could stop pushing burgers to a climate-weary population, considering that raising cattle causes considerably more carbon than a roof. But consistency isn’t a Cali-value. Forcing other people to do your bidding is.

What clinched it for Brandon was his California-economic thinking when he said, “it doesn’t raise your taxes at all, because the cost is up to the building owner.” Because, you know, owners don’t pass those costs along.
