As I am typing this email one of our Independence Institute freedom fighters is in Antarctica running with penguins. Literally.
Sadly, one of the bonds I share with Todd Lubas, our Director of Strategic Partnerships, is the loss of a loved one to a rare cancer. As you know, I lost my daughter Parker just days away from her first birthday to a vicious brain cancer. Todd lost his beautiful two-year-old niece, Josie, to a rare brain cancer as well.
Every year the folks here at Independence ride in the Courage Classic under the proud name “Team Parker” and I am so grateful they honor my daughter. Todd and Josie’s father are doing something similar to keep her memory alive while raising money for a cure. They are running the Antarctica Marathon which allows only 90 runners to make their way over the snow and ice.
Events like this for people like Todd and I do more than words can express. It helps bring meaning to something unfathomable. I’d like you to meet Josie and hear her story in this quick video. If you are moved to do so, please support Todd’s cause. Let’s hope he doesn’t get eaten by a walrus.
You might notice that Todd is raising this money to fight cancer on a crowd-funding site made for liberty-lovers called freedomfy.com. I’ll tell you more about it another day.
In my latest for the Denver Post I explain how ignorant I used to be about guns and why I don’t support reasonable gun control.
David Kopel and Joseph Greenlee explain why a gun ban for young adults would be wholly unconstitutional. Read their piece in The Hill here.
Because you’re not taxed nearly enough, we’re keeping our eyes on a slew of initiatives to raise taxes this fall. The grandest by far is a plan to tax the “rich” and redistribute the money to middle class people who make less than $70,000 per year. Complete Colorado’s Sherrie Peif reports here. And you thought legalized pot made Colorado a first! Move over Michael Bloomberg. This one sure smells like the work of Chris Hughes, a co-founder of Facebook. Do you get tired of our state being the political plaything for rich, out-of-state progressives?
Well, we’re not going to let them turn us into California that easily. I hope you’ll join us to poke fun at the Californication of Colorado at our Founders’ Night dinner on April 26th. Columnist David Harsanyi and scholar Steven Hayward will explain just how they’re planning to turn us into East California. To learn more about Founders’ Night, sponsor a table, and get your tickets, go here!
Finally, tune in to Devil’s Advocate tonight at 8:30 on Colorado Public TV Channel 12 as we handicap the Democrat primary race for governor.
Think Freedom!
