School finance is a constant topic of interest in Colorado education discussions. However, the complex nature of school finance means that many do not feel adequately prepared to meaningfully participate in these conversations. In his latest publication, Senior Education Policy Analyst Ross Izard provides the information needed to have honest, accurate discussions of Colorado’s school finance situation. In the process, he also provides a different—and often absent—perspective on the conversation.

This issue paper includes discussions on the operation and design of the Colorado school finance system; the amount of money currently available to public education in the state; trends over time in Colorado school finance, including how these trends have been impacted by competing state budget priorities; Colorado’s ranking relative to other states on various measures of school funding; and research and evidence on the effects of school funding on student performance.
