Universal School Choice Law in Utah: Non-Public School Scholarships Available for Every K-12 Student by 2020

Today, Utah Governor Jon Huntsman, Jr. signed into law a landmark bill that will allow more than 95 percent of Utah K-12 students access to scholarships for attendance at non-public schools in 2007-2008 and beyond.

Students will be eligible to receive the scholarships if they are currently enrolled in public school or are enrolled in a non-public school and qualify for free or reduced lunch. All incoming kindergarten students are eligible for scholarships, which means every Utah K-12 student will be eligible by 2020.

The amount of each scholarship will range from $500 to $3,000, depending on family size and income level. Students may attend any private school, religious or non-religious, that chooses to participate in the program and meets eligibility requirements.
