“Oligarchy”—Calling the Kettle Black

“Oligarchy”—Calling the Kettle Black

After leading leftist political officials started trumpeting their commitment to “our democracy,” I called them out on it in a January, 2022 column for the Epoch Times, I demonstrated that they showed more dedication to oligarchy—rule by the few—than to democracy.

Among the evidence was the Left’s disregard of civil liberties, corruption of electoral procedures, and flouting of popular opinion as expressed in state ballot issues. The oligarchy consisted of a few long-serving congressional politicians, certain special interests, much of the federal bureaucracy, and cheerleaders in academia and their propaganda media.

Since that time, I’ve repeatedly published (as here) the connection between the modern Left and oligarchy.

So it is fascinating—and a little flattering—to see that I’ve been appropriated. Socialist politicians like Bernie Sanders and Alexandra Cortez have adopted my term for them to describe the popular majority they oppose.

Among conservative activists, there’s a saying that if leftists accuse conservatives of something, it’s often because that’s just what they are doing themselves.

That certainly would seem to be the case here.
