Harvey Weinstein and Bill Cosby are finally coming to terms for their crimes. I believe this is an important moment for justice as well as the #MeToo movement, a movement that could be summed up in one word – consent.
Consent is at the heart of all our work here at Independence. We know when people are empowered to freely associate, to voluntarily have relationships, to work together, to combine efforts, to trade goods or services, or to go on their separate ways, we all thrive. Via consent we empower ourselves and respect the innate authority of others.
When it comes to government, we’re committed to protect our Founders’ vision that its authority comes only from the consent of the governed. The only legitimate, limited power the state has flows through us.
Even progressives give lip service to this concept of consent. But while the #MeToo movement is demanding consent, the #NoConsent movement here in Colorado is ripping it away. Their goal is simple – to tear away your right to consent to new taxes, debt and growing government.
That’s the consent you have thanks to our Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights. And the Harvey Weinsteins in this case are the courts, politicians and the takings coalition.
They have weakened TABOR to a ghost of what it once was. We want to build it back up. So, we and our coalition partners are hitting the road for the Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights.
I hope you’ll join us for our TABOR Roadshow visiting Steamboat Springs on June 12, Aspen on June 13, and Durango on June 14. Bring a friend and drag a politician to remind them what consent means. More info about all of our events here.
And check out TABORyes.com to learn more about your Taxpayer’s Bill of Rights and sign the pledge to support it. And better still, ask those who are asking for your vote to sign it!
