School district portfolio management is an emerging governing strategy in public education that re-envisions the role of school boards and places a greater emphasis on serving the needs of students as consumers. Rather than setting policy and providing direct oversight, school boards (especially in larger districts) maintain a portfolio of service providers that run a variety of different school models and programs geared toward community demands and then hold the providers accountable based on their measured performance.

A portfolio could include traditional neighborhood schools; magnet, option or focus schools; charter schools; innovation schools; and even non-public contract schools.
