Driverless Nevada, Here We Come!
The Nevada legislature has passed a law allowing driverless cars in the Silver State. The law directs the state’s Department of Transportation to “adopt regulations authorizing the operation of autonomous vehicles.” Meanwhile, Volkswagen has announced that it has developed a car that incorporates a “temporary auto pilot” (TAP) that can drive at up to 80 […]
Time Mag’s Constitutional Baby Babble
Several readers sent me for comment a lengthy cover article in Time Magazine by managing editor Richard Stengel. Stengel’s piece is one result of new public interest in our Constitution and in “first principles”—interest that has forced political liberals (Stengel has been a paid Democratic activist) to think about the document’s real meaning. Previously, of […]
Impatient As It Makes Me Sound, Welcome “School Choice Now!” to Edublog World
Yes, I have problems with patience. Being perpetually 5 years old kind of does that to you. I can get myself in trouble by yelling for “Legos now!” or “Let’s go to the park now!” Still, I think my parents would be less inclined to come down hard on me for proclaiming the title of […]
The FDA, Avastin, and death panels
“The FDA, stuck in its 1960s Thalidomide glory days mindset, denies Americans access to life-saving drugs. …[D]espite its intentions, [the FDA] drives up the costs of medicines & often dries up the supply chain altogether. America is currently facing a shortage of about 246 drugs – a record high.” – Milton Wolf, MD
Unbelievable: TWO Lawsuits Now to Stop Dougco Families’ Educational Choices
Has it only been two days since reactionary forces — the forces of WE know what’s best for you — dropped a lawsuit bomb to try to stop 500 Douglas County students from getting better educational opportunity? Colorado Peak Politics highlighted problems facing a couple of the plaintiffs’ relation to the legal action. And now, […]
State Senator cites our work as a reason for PUC audit
State Senator Scott Renfroe (R-Greeley) said in an interview on the Amy Oliver Show on 1310 KFKA that information we published was influential in his decision to request an audit of the Colorado Public Utilities Commission. Specifically Senator Renfroe cited: Colorado Open Records Act (CORA) request for all travel documents for the PUC commissioners that lead […]
Commuter Rail 1, Archeological Heritage 0
Utah is so intent on building rail transit that it is willing to cook the books and systematically overestimate ridership in order to support its ridiculously expensive rail projects. One commuter-rail line, for example, is expected to attract a 6,100 new transit riders a day, or 3,050 new round trips, for a mere $612 million. […]
Good to See Douglas County Leaders Stand Up Against Shameful Anti-Choice Lawsuit
This week the Douglas County School District completed its second round of applications and filled the last of 500 Choice Scholarships enabling students to attend a private school. It’s a shame to see so-called civil liberties groups working to deprive Douglas County families of educational opportunity. But it’s good to see the school board and district officials press forward with their thoughtful vision to expand school choice in their community.
Pam Benigno Provides Independence Institute Response to Douglas County Anti-Voucher Lawsuit
Education Policy Center director Pam Benigno appeared on Denver’s CBS 4 News to respond to news that the ACLU and other groups had filed suit in an attempt to stop the Douglas County school board from giving publicly-funded “Choice Scholarships” to district families who opt for a private school education. “They’re taking away from about 500 kids the opportunity to find the best school that fits their needs,” Benigno said.
Thinking About How to Approach the Education Future with Khan Academy
Little Eddie is on the run today, so I just want to point you to a quickie. A few months ago I told you about the glimpse into the education future known as Khan Academy. After talking about how the online curriculum was being used in a California school, I noted:
It represents a key part […]
Accountable Care Organizations: Soviet-style command & control medicine that strangles innovation & quality
Accountable Care Organizations “will become the medical equivalent of the state-run giant collective farms that failed to feed the USSR. Central planning will strangle innovation in American medicine just as it strangled the Eastern Bloc economies during the Cold War.”
Why Rail?
After nearly 50 percent cost overruns, eighteen months of delays, and a scandal that cost top transit agency officials their jobs, Norfolk, Virginia plans to open its first light-rail line for business in August, 2011. This fabulous 7.4-mil line expected to carry an average of 2,900 riders per day in its first year, increasing to […]
